Manson Family Apartment

The Manson Family Apartment collection includes items from 1725 P. Street in Sacramento, California - collected from a neighbor who was friendly with the tenants. At the time Lynette Fromme and Sandra Good lived at this address, along with a rotation of other people associated with the Manson Family. They moved to this location in 1973 to be closer to Charles Manson while he was imprisoned in Folsom Prison. Near the end of their time living in this location, Fromme made an attempt to assassinate Gerald Ford.

This collection has been organized into four main categories. Susa Grogan, Susan Murphy, postcards, and miscellaneous items.

Susan Grogan is the younger sister of Manson family member Steven ‘Clem’ Grogan. Grogan (whose last name later became Bartlett by marriage) was a visitor at the apartment and some of her personal belongings were stored at this location. She worked as a waitress at the Senator Hotel, which is the location Ford stayed the night before his assassination attempt. Amongst her possessions was a slip of paper with the note ‘cocktail work, Senator Hotel’ and a phone number. It is unknown as to whether her connection to this location was coincidental or not.

Susan Murphy was another minor member of the Manson Family. Several of her possessions were at the family apartment, although like Grogan she was not known to have lived at this location. Murphy was convicted for mail conspiracy around the time that Sandra Good was sentenced to prison time.

The three postcards that came from this collection were addressed to various members of the family at this address. One to Lynette Fromme, with the name ‘Sandy’ also quoted as a recipient. This postcard is sent from author John Brooks Barry and mentions how he ‘thinks often of the family.’ The other postcards seem to be from other individuals - one addressed to Sandy Good and the other to a hard to decipher name in handwriting.

Miscellaneous items included cover business cards, to handwritten notes on scraps of paper, to a trial continuance slip and personal photographs.

The items in this collection and their significance is an ongoing research project.
